Terrifying Facts About Space That Will Creep You Out

Space itself is inconceivably large, an absolutely crazy, weird place. There are a lot of strange things out there. We highlight the top 13 Facts about space.

13. Type Ia supernovae often referred to as zombie stars because these white dwarfs have the ability to come back to life. White dwarfs are essentially dead until they create an enormous supernovae that sucks material from their neighbors to bring them back to life. As they come back to life, their innards are scattered across the universe.

12. These “vampire” stars are known as blue stragglers. They remain young, allowing themselves to burn hotter and appear bluer than their neighbor stars by sucking the hydrogen fuel away from their more ancient neighbors.

11. There-are-rocks in space that are able to create large sized disasters. One rock at 0.6 miles wide can strike Earth and destroy everything in its path. Even, smaller rock of 130 feet across can cause severe damage to the planet. It is thought that one large rock “6 miles wide” is what wiped out the dinosaurs. These days, scientists are able to watch the skies for these dangerous rocks and plan ahead.

10. There are not the comforting lights that are lit daily here on Earth, so if you’re afraid of the dark, then space is not the place for you. There are many dangerous phenomena lurking in the empty, vast darkness of space, and even with all the stars, there is still a vast open darkness.

09. Most people think of black holes as holes in space that suck everything in and let nothing out but that’s not, always true. They are categorized by their size: Supermassive, large, small and micro. The micro holes are currently only a theory, but the medium black holes are formed when stars collapsed and consume each other. Because their reach isn’t very far they do not consume everything. Then there are fast moving black holes which moves at rapid rates (millions of miles per hour). These will consume everything in their path, but they have to be close enough to reach it. The worst happened when they collide with another objects which can cause them to change direction.

08. When a supermassive star reaches the end of its life, it collapses into a black hole. This cause a high amount of energy to be released in the form of plasma jettisoning from the center of the star. This occurs only with the largest stars in the universe. Since there are only few such stars in our galaxy, then we are safe for now.

07. There are rough planets out in space that don not follow any given orbit. They may have been in an orbit at one time but now they refuse to play by the rule. They were most likely knocked out of their orbit by another body and now they are set on doing the same. These planets will roam through space until their course is altered or stopped by another cosmic body. These planets are outnumbered the stars and presumed to be the size of Jupiter. These planets are just waiting to knock someone else out of their orbit.

06. No one truly knows the cause of the universe’ expansion, however there are many theories. Quantum physics proves that there are subatomic particles constantly being created and destroyed through space. The extra energy is traveling through all of the space, producing energy known as vacuum energy that pushes space, itself, apart.

05. Icecube, a neutrino-detecting project, is on the move detecting mass-less elementary particles known as neutrinos. It is done by embedding special detectors within large chunks of ice, beneath the sea and underground. These particles are electrically neutral and exist everywhere in the universe, and many are traveling through you at this very moment. They can even pass through lead without any controversy. The neutrinos, commonly referred to as phantom particles, are created in the fiery depths of healthy stars and supernovae explosions caused by dying stars.

04. In the micro-gravity environment, astronauts are not using their feet to walk. Therefore, the skin on their feet starts to soften and flakes off. As laundry facilities do not exist in space, astronauts will wear the same underwear and socks for a few days. Those socks then need to be taken off very gently, because if not, those their dead skin cells will float around in the weightless environment.

03. This seem strange to comprehend but a year on Venus is 224 earth day. However, it takes 243 days to rotate on its axes just once.

02. Another change on human body in micro-gravity is that spins straightens out as gravity is not pushing you down. In fact you can be up to as much as 5 cm taller in the Space Station.

01. Mercury is the closest planet to the sun, it is not actually the hottest. Mercury does not have any atmosphere meaning that this planet is only hot in the daytime, when it is directly facing the sun. At this stage temperatures can rise to 425°C but at night the planet temperature can drop down to a freezing -180°C. Venus is the hottest planet. Its thick clouds trap the sun’ heat causing Venus to be a sizzling 500°C all the time!
